📋 Instructions

  1. Plan your color changes by noting where each color starts and ends.
  2. End-of-row color change: Complete the last stitch of the row up to the final yarn-over. Yarn over with the new color and pull through to finish the stitch. Continue crocheting with the new color.

  1. Mid-row color change: Work one stitch before the color change, then yarn over with the new color and finish the stitch. Continue across the row with the new color.

🔑 Key tips

  • Always switch colors on the last yarn-over of a stitch for a smooth transition.
  • Keep tension consistent when joining new colors to avoid loose stitches.
  • Use stitch markers or clips to plan where color changes occur in complex patterns.
  • Leave a 4–6 inch tail at each color change so you have plenty of length to secure it later. For now, just let the tails hang — you’ll learn how to weave them in neatly during the dedicated mini lesson. If you’re changing colors frequently, you can also carry the unused yarn along the row to avoid creating extra ends.

🏋️ Practice

  • Make a small 10-stitch by 6-row swatch using two colors. Choose any basic stitch you like—sc, hdc, dc, or tr.
    • Change colors at the end of a row using the standard method: finish the final stitch by yarning over with the new color and continue working.
    • Try one mid-row color change to see how it affects texture.
    • For your first mid-row attempt, use the same method as an end-of-row change (drop the active yarn and complete the next yarn-over with the new color).
    • For your second attempt, try the mid-row technique shown in the video: pull the loop up, insert your hook top-down through the post, then yarn over with the new color and pull through.
    • Compare the two mid-row methods and choose the one you prefer.

🎯 Goal

You can change yarn colors cleanly at the end or middle of rows and manage tails so your project looks seamless and polished.
