📋 Instructions

  • Use a worsted weight yarn and a 5 mm hook.
  • Half Double Crochet Square: Start with a chain of 15. Work approximately 11 rows of hdc.
  • Double Crochet Square: Start with a chain of 15. Work approximately 8 rows of dc.
  • Leave a 6-inch tail at both the beginning and end of each square. Cut your yarn, then pull the tail through the final loop on your hook to secure it and prevent the square from unraveling.

🎯 Objective

Practice maintaining consistent stitch height, even tension, and neat edges with both hdc and dc stitches. Compare the texture and height difference between the two stitch types.

🔀 Optional Variation

  • Try working a row slightly looser or tighter and observe how it changes the look and feel of the square.
  • Experiment with different yarns or hook sizes to see how tension and stitch definition change.
  • To neatly hide the starting and ending tails, jump ahead and check out this mini-lesson:

Reflection & Next Steps

✅ Skill Check

  • Can you make a row of half double crochet and a row of double crochet with even stitches and straight edges?
  • Are you comfortable counting turning chains and starting in the correct stitch?

👀 Looking Ahead

Next week you'll deepen your skills by learning the Slip Stitch. learning the Treble (Triple) Crochet and taller stitches, and discovering ways to identify and correct common mistakes without ripping out entire rows.
