Project
Add a border to your mug rug.
📋 Instructions
- Choose a stitch for your border: single crochet (sc) or slip stitch (sl st).
- Insert your hook into the first stitch of the edge and begin working your chosen stitch around the coaster.
- Adjust stitch counts along the sides based on the original stitch:
- Single crochet sides: add 1 stitch per sc
- Half double crochet sides: Add 1.5 stitches for each hdc row, or 3 stitches for every 2 hdc rows. Space them evenly—the count doesn’t need to be exact.
- Double crochet sides: add 2 stitches per dc
- At each corner, work 3 stitches into the corner stitch to allow smooth turning.
- Join the last stitch to the first with a slip stitch.
- Weave in all yarn ends neatly using a yarn needle.
🎯 Objective
Practice creating a clean, even border around a finished piece, maintaining consistent tension, adjusting for stitch height, and turning corners smoothly.
🔀 Optional Variation
- Try using a different border stitch, such as a crab stitch (reverse single crochet) or picot edge for added texture.
- Use a contrasting color for the border to highlight your coaster’s edges.
Reflection & Next Steps
✅ Skill Check
- Are your yarn ends securely woven in?
- Are your seams aligned, flat, and mostly invisible?
- Do your borders sit evenly with smooth corners?
