Recognizing Symbols

📚 What you’ll learn

Understand how crochet symbols represent stitches and how to read their placement in diagrams.

🎥 Watch

📋 Instructions

  1. Each stitch has its own symbol (for example: ○ = chain, + or x = single crochet, T = half double crochet, T with one cross line = double crochet).
  2. These symbols are intentionally designed to resemble the stitches they represent — both in height and overall shape.
  3. Symbols also show where the hook is placed and how stitches connect. When a stitch has a placement modifier (like FLO, BLO, or post stitches), the symbol stays mostly the same but includes an extra mark to show the special placement.

🔑 Key tips

  • Keep your list of written abbreviations nearby — each one matches a specific symbol.
  • Highlight row numbers on your diagram so you always know where you are.
  • Watch for placement modifiers (FLO, BLO, middle bar) and note how the symbol changes.
  • Compare the symbol to the real stitch in your work to see how the shapes relate.

🏋️ Practice

  • Look at the provided image and match each crochet symbol to its stitch name.
