📚 What you’ll learn

Understand the parts of a stitch — top “V,” front loop, back loop, post, and how your hook interacts with them.

🎥 Watch

*Note that this is in UK terminology.

📋 Instructions

  1. Examine your previous swatches.
  2. Identify the top loops, front loop, and back loop of each stitch.
  3. Locate the post of the stitch (the vertical strand between the top and base).
  4. Observe the legs — the strands that connect the post to the base.

🔑 Key tips

  • Understanding how a stitch is formed makes it easier to count stitches, fix mistakes, and use stitch modifiers correctly—skills that are especially useful when adding texture.

🏋️ Practice

  • Work each basic stitch (sc, hdc, dc) slowly. Pay close attention to each yarn over and where the strand lands. For each stitch, note which part of the stitch is formed by the yarn over.

🎯 Goal

You can identify the front loop, back loop, top “V”, post, and base.
