Project
Make a 4” x 4” single crochet coaster.
📋 Instructions
- Use worsted weight yarn and a 5 mm (H/8) hook.
- Start with a chain of 15.
- Beginning in the second chain from hook, work 14 single crochet (sc) across the chain. Turn.
- Ch 1 (turning chain, does not count as a stitch) and sc 14 stitches (sts) to the end of the row. Turn.
- Continue for approximately 17 rows, maintaining even tension and straight edges.
- Leave a 6-inch tail at both the beginning and end of each square. Cut your yarn, then pull the tail through the final loop on your hook to secure it and prevent the square from unraveling.
🎯 Objective
Practice maintaining consistent stitch height, neat edges, and even tension.
🔀 Optional Variation
- Make the square slightly bigger or smaller by starting with a longer or shorter chain or adjusting the number of rows.
- Make a second square with a different hook size, then compare the two swatches to see how hook size affects drape, density, and overall feel.

Reflection & Next Steps
✅ Skill Check
- Can you make a straight-edged swatch of single crochet?
- Do your stitches look even in height and width?
- Are you starting to feel comfortable controlling your yarn tension?
👀 Looking Ahead
Next week, you’ll build on this foundation by learning the half double crochet (hdc) and double crochet (dc)— two basic stitches that add height and open new possibilities for texture and speed.
