Slip Stitch

📚 What you’ll learn

How to make a slip stitch — the simplest crochet stitch, used to join pieces, move your yarn across a row, or create smooth, flat edges. You’ll practice controlling tension to keep your stitches neat and even.

📋 Instructions

  1. Insert your hook into the next stitch.
  2. Yarn over hook (YOH).
  3. Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook in one motion. The slip stitch is complete. It should look like a small, flat stitch that hugs your fabric closely.

🔑 Key tips

  • Keep your tension loose — tight slip stitches can pull and distort your fabric.
  • The slip stitch adds no height, making it perfect for joining rounds, finishing edges, or moving across stitches invisibly.
  • When working slip stitches across a row, try not to tug; let the yarn glide naturally through the loops.

🏋️ Practice

  • Work a row of 10–12 slip stitches across the edge of a previous swatch.
  • Then try joining two small swatches together:
    • Hold the swatches with their edges aligned.
    • Insert your hook through both layers at once (the matching stitches on each piece).
    • Yarn over and pull through both layers and the loop on your hook to complete the slip stitch.
    • Notice how this creates a flat, secure seam without bulk.

🎯 Goal

You can confidently make consistent slip stitches with even tension, use them to join or finish projects neatly, and recognize their appearance in your crochet fabric and diagrams.
