📋 Instructions

  1. Start with your slip knot on the hook
  2. Yarn over (wrap the yarn over the hook) and pull through the loop on your hook.
  3. Repeat until you have the desired number of chains (e.g., 11).

🔑 Key tips

  • Each chain corresponds to one oval in a diagram. Counting these ovals helps you track stitch count in patterns.

  • Chain slowly to maintain even loop size.
  • Keep the chain flat and untwisted.
  • Work your foundation chain loosely. Tight chains can make it difficult to insert your hook later, while looser chains give your stitches room to form cleanly.
  • The top of each chain forms a “V” shape — this is the visual guide for counting stitches and where you’ll insert your hook for future rows.

🏋️ Practice

  • Make a chain of 11.
  • Count the stitches by locating the “V” shapes on top of each chain — each V is one chain stitch.
  • Repeat until your chains are even in size and flat.

🎯 Goal to Aim For

You can make a smooth, even chain of 11 stitches that lays flat, with each chain clearly identifiable by its “V” shape.
