📚 What you’ll learn
The single crochet is a fundamental stitch in crochet — short, sturdy, and easy to master. It forms the foundation for many projects and helps build tension control and muscle memory.

📋 Instructions
- Insert your hook into the next stitch (under both top loops unless your pattern says otherwise). When working the first single crochet after a chain sequence, insert your hook into the top two loops of the second chain from your hook.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop — you’ll have 2 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over again, and pull through both loops on the hook.
- You’ve made one single crochet!

🔑 Key tips
- Count your stitches every row to avoid skipping the first or last stitch.
- Remember: single crochet is abbreviated as sc, and in stitch diagrams it’s drawn as x or +.
- “Yarn over” is abbreviated as yo or yoh in written instructions.
- Listen for a soft “slide” sound as the yarn moves — that indicates smooth tension.
🏋️ Practice
- Begin with a foundation chain of 11.
- The chain closest to your hook is your turning chain. It gives your first row height but does not count as a stitch in a row of single crochets. You’ll learn more about turning chains in Week 2 when we explore taller stitches.
- Create a single crochet:
- Insert hook under the second chain from the hook.
- Yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
- Yarn over, pull through both loops.
- Create a single crochet in every stitch across the row.
- When you reach the end, turn.
🎯 Goal to Aim For
Build uniform fabric with consistent tension.
