Turning Your Work

📚 What you’ll learn

How to turn your crochet piece at the end of a row and understand what “turn” means in patterns.

🎥 Watch

📋 Instructions

At the end of a row, flip your work over like turning a page in a book. Right-handed crocheters work from right to left; left-handed crocheters work from left to right. It doesn’t matter which way you flip — clockwise or counterclockwise — as long as you do it the same way every time.

🔑 Key tips

  • There are two sides to your work: a “right” side and a “wrong” side. To tell which side is the “right” or “wrong” side, look for your yarn tail.
  • For right-handed crocheters, the “right” side of your work will have the tail on the left and the “wrong” side will have the tail on the right.
  • For left-handed crocheters, the “right” side of your work will have the tail on the right and the “wrong” side will have the tail on the left.

🏋️ Practice

  • Hold a short length of yarn or a small chain in both hands.
  • Practice “turning” it by flipping it over like a book and transferring the ends from one hand to the other.
  • Repeat several times using the same turning direction.
  • Notice how consistency — not direction — is what keeps your rows aligned as you learn to crochet.

🎯 Goal to Aim For

You can turn your work consistently, maintain even edges, and understand how turning relates to right- and wrong-side rows.
